Drawing and Design P(B6552) Through this course, students explore, understand, create, evaluate art and design.The framework of the course is the visual elements and principles of design, style, and evaluation.Students explore art and design history within the individual project context.
Painting P(B6556) Students explore a range of painting techniques and develop their creative voice. Class discussions and projects are designed to foster a supportive community, productive discussions/critiques, and individual and collaborative thinking.
Studio ArtP(B6540 ) Studio Art is a foundation class stressing basic art and design skills while surveying a variety of art making techniques and materials.The general goal of the class is to explore a variety of mixed media within the two dimensional and three dimensional context. Sculpture P(B6554) This course will introduce students to three-dimensional design and art composition utilizing clay and other materials.A variety of techniques will be explored and emphasis is placed on students investigating and developing their own artistic abilities and creative potential.
Cartooning(B6558) Cartooning/Animation. Learn the fundamental basics of drawing cartoons, along with projects of making your own comic strip and mini-comic.The second half of the course focuses on animation that uses old school techniques mixed with new school computer methods.
Digital Arts & DesignP (B6560)Digital Arts and Design is an introductory course that teaches students a broad set of skills in Photoshop and Illustrator. The course will introduce how to work with basic raster and vector-based images while emphasizing specific skills/techniques as well as individual creativity. Formal design standards and principles will be emphasized along with creative problem solving, experimentation, and personal expression.
Architectural Design P (K7670) This course focuses on learning architectural design theories and principles through drawing and model making. Prior drawing experience is not required for success in this class. Many mediums are used including pencils, charcoal, pen, watercolor, and computer aided design software. The course takes a project-based learning approach, and focuses on gaining a deeper understanding of volume, space, textures, and forms through making physical models.
Landscape Architecture and Design P (K7669)This course examines the relationship between people and their environment through a project-based learning approach. There is a focus on applying landscape architecture theories and principles through drawing, model making, and spending time outside in the SDA Garden. Prior drawing experience is not required. Students will also gain an appreciation for the historical and cultural traditions that are reflected in landscape architectural designs. Student projects have included public parks, healing/restorative gardens, and skate parks!
Fashion Design (H7521X) This is a fashion design course which applies elements and principles of design, history of fashion, explores careers related to fashion design, manufacturing and merchandising, and gives students the opportunity to create their own custom apparel.
Advanced Sculpture (B6555) Advanced Sculpture gives students who have mastered the basic sculptural skills and techniques opportunities to explore 3-dimensional art making further. Students will produce works of art using such mediums as: clay, wood, metal, construction paper, found objects, wire and plaster. This course will challenge students to work with instructors and set personal and individual goals in terms of research and art production. In addition, students will develop greater strength and abilities in articulation and investigation of the significance of their own work and the work of other artists.
Seminar in ArtP (B6569)This course is designed to give students the opportunity to refine their own artwork and different media that they have worked in. Each student chooses their focus and can tailor their studies to their own artistic interests. Seminar in Art is for advanced level students who would like a focused independent study format in art. Drawing, painting, digital art, photography, sculpture and/or mixed media can be chosen as a means to create their “Body of Work”. The importance of art in our daily lives and its career potential is highlighted through outside contacts such as college visitations, guest artists, gallery/museum visits, and studio visits. Students will be able to build a portfolio in their chosen media during this course. This class is helpful for students interested in taking AP 2D/AP drawing or any upperclassman who has had at least 2 courses in visual art at SDA.
AP Studio Art(B6566) AP Art Studio is a course that prepares you for building a portfolio. Within AP Art Studio, there are 3 categories to pick from: 2-D Art & Design, Drawing, and 3-D Art & Design. This is a very rigorous course that demands hard work and follow through, but what you will walk away with is something you can be very proud of and use it to show potential colleges, clients, and/or galleries.
AP Art History(B6565) Art History is designed to provide an understanding and enjoyment of global architecture, sculpture, painting, and other art forms within a historical and cultural context. In the course, students learn to look at works of art with intelligence and sensitivity, examining the major forms of artistic expression of the past and of distant cultures, as well as those of our own time and environment.
Art Leadership (B6970) Designed for 11th and 12th grade students, the major goals of Art Leadership are to examine, teach, and create school & community-based large scale art projects in various activities and forms. This idea further extends the class into engaging the students in the process of creating, curating and operating art spaces & gallery exhibitions and art-related events. Students will serve as active participants in developing a project or exhibition concept, writing a proposal, researching relevant artists/artwork, and developing and executing development and promotional materials. Teacher approval is needed as the student will be paired with a teacher-mentor, and the ability to work independently is encouraged.
